The Mustangs struggled to put the ball in the net and had trouble getting their offense going, losing to the Saxons, 37-47.
The Mira Costa Girls Basketball Team played their first game against Torrance High School on Wednesday, Dec. 12, at Torrance. After a long and tough game, the Mustangs just fell short to the Saxons, 37-47.
“The other team was really smart offensively and made the right plays to consistently score throughout the game,” senior forward Kim Waller said. “Although we didn’t play our best today, we still worked really hard and learned how to work better together as a team.”
During the first quarter, both teams ran onto the court with high energy. The Mustangs didn’t miss a beat as they immediately began to fight to take the lead. Unfortunately, the Saxons took over quickly and closed out the first quarter ahead of the Mustangs.
“The first half was not our strongest,” senior shooting guard Ella Erich said. “The main thing was we needed to play better defense, but we did create good shots for our teammates. Unfortunately, they just weren’t falling.
As the game went on, the Mustangs refused to give up. They went into the second quarter down 11 points, but they worked together and finally begin to catch up to the Saxons. After a lot of hard work, the Mustangs came close, but just fell short to take the lead, with a score of 23-26.
“We got the lead up and we were only down three points at half time, but we really just couldn’t keep it up in the second half,” senior shooting guard Skylar Herdman said.
During the third quarter ended, Costa was unable to keep up with the Saxons due to their strong offense. Even though they were struggling, they kept their spirits high and were determined to keep working hard, according to Waller.
“The third quarter definitely could’ve gone better for us point-wise,” Waller said. “But, we kept chipping at their lead piece by piece and our defense kept getting better.”
During the fourth quarter, the Mustangs were able to get some more points on the board, but it wasn’t enough to tie up the game. The Saxons kept pushing forward and the Mustangs finished the quarter and the game, losing 37-47.
“The fourth quarter wasn’t our best because we started to get sloppy on both offense and defence,” Waller said.
The Mustangs are scheduled to play next in their annual Santa Barbara Tournament, which will begin on Thursday, December 19 in Santa Barbara, California. The Mustangs’ overall record is now 5-3 and their current league record is 0-1.
“We didn’t play our best tonight and we know we can do better,” Herdman said. “We are going to work hard in practice and get our heads back in the game before our Santa Barbara tournament next week.”
