On Thursday, Mar. 12, the Manhattan Beach Unified School District announced that MBUSD schools will be closed until May. 5.  Because students are no longer attending school, many seniors are missing out on many high school memories. Accommodations should be made to prevent seniors from missing out on these experiences so their time in high school is complete.

As of Mar. 23, the date to return to school for MBUSD schoolsis May 5. However, this could potentially be pushed back because of how serious the virus is. According to Governor Gavin Newsom, he anticipates that schools will be closed for the remainder of the school year. This puts many important highschool events for all students, especially seniors, at risk of being cancelled. Graduation is something every senior should experience because it’s the ceremony where all their hard work from the past four years is congratulated. Instead of cancelling graduation completely, it should be postponed until it is safe for the event to take place.

Throughout their high school experiences, students look forward to their graduation, senior prom, senior ditch day, senior prank, last sporting events as a highschooler. It would be devastating for seniors to miss out on these events due to the virus. To decrease the possibility of this happening, as a community, self isolation for at least 2 weeks would be the best way to stop COVID-19 and prevent these events from being cancelled. If it were to get to the point of graduation and/or prom being cancelled, it should rather be postponed until it is safe to take place.

Seniors need to have a graduation ceremony to commemorate their accomplishments in high school. The most a community can do to prevent seniors from losing life long memories, like prom and graduation is to self-isolate from everyone. This will decrease the virus’ chance of affecting more and more lives. To help out seniors experience moments they’ll never forget, self-isolation is the best thing the community can do. If school is still closed when it is time for graduation, instead of it being cancelled, it should be postponed until it is safe.
