Netflix’s latest show, “Away” intrigued viewers with its amazing script and directing with its main 5 characters and each of their personal stories. The 5 main characters are also accompanied by the 2 side characters who drive the plot and give the show its amazing storyline.
Consisting of ten episodes, “Away” first season, the show takes place on earth and the audience first learns that the main character, Emma Green, must leave her family behind to lead her crew to be the first crew ever to walk on Mars. The main plot line is developed soon after, with Emma’s self doubt in being the crew’s captain and her struggle to be a mom and a wife from space.
Released on Sept. 4, The cast is composed of Hillary Swank as Emma Green, Talitha Bateman as Alexis Logan and Josh Charles as Matt Logan.
One of the intriguing key components of the show is the fact that the audience vividly learns each character’s specific journey and why they are doing what they are doing where they are doing it in present time. In depth viewers get to see the pasts of Emma and her crew members Quesi, Misha, Ram, and Lu. The audience relieves all of their pain and get to emotionally age with each character.
The show’s greatest strength is the personal story that goes along with each character. For example, Quesi’s parents both died from dehydration when he was a kid, sparking his obsession with water and plants. Ram’s brother passed away when he was a kid which led him to his dream he shared with his brother of going to the moon. Misha had a longing for forgiveness from his daughter. Lu has a secret love for a woman named Mei. Lastly Emma has to struggle to raise her daughter and help her husband recover from a stroke all from space. Each individual story connects into a bigger idea which creates the phenomenal story of the show.
The relationship between Emma and her peers is the key point that drove the plot. The way Emma puts her peers before her was the main way that the story kept its plot constantly changing. Emma’s risks she made as a mom, wife, and mother all contradicted the plot in a positive way.
Although the acting, directing, and screenplay was absolutely outstanding, Some parts of the show were left unexplained. For example, Melissa was left instructed by Emma to take care of Emma’s daughter in an emergency. We see Melissa take on the role of a female figure in Emma’s daughter, Alexis’ life after Alexis’ father, Matt comes upon a complication. As Melissa and Matt make an effort to parent Alexis, there is an appealing chemistry between them but nothing comes of it, confusing and distracting the audience.
Along with the unforeseen chemistry between Melissa and Matt, it is hard to keep up with the crew. Emma’s crew each get’s their life stories displayed for the audience. All 5 members of the crew have different backgrounds so it can be hard to keep up with. The show’s tendency to jump around from person to person makes it somewhat difficult to keep along with all the details.
Away still maintains the romance, drama, and mystery aspect of the movie throughout the first season. It is an amazing story that teaches genuine life lessons. It is amazingly directed and scripted and there is not a single dull moment of the show.
All ten episodes of season one of “Away” are rated PG-13 and can be streamed on Netflix.
