The “Secret Society of Second-Born Royals” is an enjoyable, quick watch. With a run time of only around 100 minutes long, this new Disney film is short and sweet, and definitely worth a watch.
Although the film may leave viewers wondering what age group this movie is targeting, the plot as well as the themes it addresses makes it enjoyable for all ages. Additionally, the acting is both child friendly and captivating for older teens and adults alike. The realistic graphics add to the compelling storyline as well.
“The Secret Society of Second-Born Royals” is a contemporary, science fantasy action superhero film released on Disney+ on Sept. 25, 2020. Directed by Anna Mastro, the movie stars Peyton Elizabeth Lee as Sam, Skylar Astin as Professor James, and Elodie Yung as Catherine, among other exceedingly talented actors.
The film centers around Princess Sam, a second-born royal, before her older sister’s coronation where her circumstances force her to secretly save the royal world.
The movie is full of relatable and powerful themes having to do with teamwork, family, feeling alone, and putting too much pressure on oneself. The characters learn many valuable lessons through their mistakes and challenges, such as the importance of the bond between sisters, and having a purpose, even when one feels worthless and alone, which allows viewers to become emotionally invested in the story.
The fantastic plot, full of compelling twists and turns, makes this movie truly riveting. Although it is a fantasy movie, the plot is told in a relatable and realistic way that augments the captivation of this film and allows viewers to get emotionally invested in the characters and their storyline.
The movie is especially relatable as the five central characters are diverse, allowing almost anyone to relate. Different races and personality traits are portrayed as well as financial differences between Sam, daughter of the queen, and her best friend Mike, the groundskeeper’s son.
Instead of a cartoon or animated movie that may be less appealing to older viewers, the riveting graphics and special effects make it much more engaging. With a captivating laser-shooting obstacle course at the beginning, and thrilling effects portraying the characters’ powers, these fun graphics immensely improve the quality and entertainment of the movie.
The acting in the film is extremely authentic and genuine, making it especially enthralling. The audience is easily able to get sucked into Sam’s story, portrayed by Peyton Elizabeth Lee, without being distracted by questionable acting choices.
