While the number of COVID-19 cases in the Los Angeles area are on the decline and the ICU availability is on the rise, it appears as though returning to campus after spring break is a real possibility. With college decisions coming out, seniors are already stressed enough as it is and are looking toward their future after Costa, not returning to Costa.
After months of writing and rewriting college application essays and supplements, the application process is finally over and seniors wait patiently to receive the admission’s decisions that will shape their future. The waiting process is a grueling game filled with second guessing the essays you poured your heart into or the “B” you got in algebra, and constantly questioning whether or not the extracurriculars you did in high school are enough for your dream school. We look forward to our hard work these past four years at Costa paying off after getting into our top schools, and moving on from Costa to the next chapter of our lives.
With this school year nearing the end, by the time the April 12 return date rolls around, a number of seniors are questioning whether returning to campus is even worth it. For underclassmen, the push for returning is understandable, as these students have a few more years at Costa, but for the class of 2021, returning to school feels more like a chore than a privilege. With such a slim possibility of having a prom, grad night and other senior traditions, the class of 2021 is better off finishing its time left at Costa from the comfort of its homes and using the extra time that virtual learning creates to prepare for the next chapter of its lives.
Without specifics in terms of our return to campus and barely even a date for return, it is hard to gauge what exactly this in-person school will look like. Going back to school for one day per week like the elementary-aged students did will not improve our education and will not provide students with adequate social interactions like the in-person education we received prior to March of 2020 did. With some students inevitably choosing to remain fully virtual, updating the schedule this late in the school year will only lead to more stress on students, teachers and parents.
