A close game between Mira Costa and El Camino Real High School resulted in a 6-5 win in penalty kicks in favor of Mira Costa.

“The game was super intense and stressful, but it was a well-deserved victory,” said junior goalkeeper Jack Walter. “I’m excited to move on to Thursday’s game.”

The possession of the ball was pretty even for the first half until the Mustangs’ defenders fouled a player from the opposing team in the box, leading to a successful penalty kick.

“They took a good shot and I tried my best,” Walter said. “PK’s are definitely one of the most challenging shots to save.”

The Mustangs offensive plays began to increase in the second half. Senior Thomas Southey scored a goal, bringing the score to 1-1. Both teams had many chances, but neither were able to score another goal.

“Thomas had a beautiful goal,” Walter said.  And it couldn’t have come at a better time, because we needed to score.”

Once the second half ended, the tied score resulted in both teams playing in a 15 minute sudden death game. The first team to score a goal would win the game, no matter how much time was left.

“The other goalie, Joe Statszkow was put in for this time and did an awesome job,” Walter said. “But [still], I was nervous watching.”

After playing for 15 minutes, the score was still tied at 1-1, meaning the winner would be decided by penalty kicks. Each team chose a goalie and 5 players to shoot.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been more worried and nervous,” Walter said. “Standing there watching was the worst part because the game was out of my hands.”

Costa was victorious after Statszkow saved a shot, and junior Chris Holbert made the winning penalty kick putting the score at 6-5. Costa faces off Servite High School Thursday at 6 P.M. at Mira Costa.

“The whole team is super tired from the Loyola game on Friday and yesterday,” Walter said.  “But, we’re excited and we keep playing better and better each time.”
