On Wednesday, August 25, approximately 300 Costa seniors met at Waller Stadium to start a new tradition: a “Senior Sunrise” walk to commemorate their first day as seniors.

As an addition to Costa’s annual Senior Sunset walk, the Senior Sunrise event was put into motion by ASB advisor Lisa Claypoole and Mira Costa’s new principal, Dr. Karina Gerger. The event, which included speeches from ASB officers, music, and food and drinks, was held at 6:15 AM to get an optimal view of the sunrise.

“Ever since summer started, [Dr. Gerger] has been pushing really hard to start new traditions. She came up with the whole idea, and Ms. Claypoole had a part in it too, in starting the year with the senior sunrise early in the morning and ending the year with a senior sunset walk. It’s a really cool ceremony,” said Trevor Verbiest, ASB Senior Class President.

According to Verbiest, it was the job of ASB officers to get the word out about the event, which was especially important because it was the seniors’ first day back fully in-person since March of 2020. The main student officials behind the event were Verbiest, ASB Vice President Natalie Lynch, and ASB President Kimiya Tabari.

“I definitely think the event was a success,” said Verbiest. “It’s really important to start traditions, and it would be really cool if, 15 years later, Costa still does the Senior Sunrise because of the class of ‘22. There was a great turnout, and everyone’s speeches were amazing.”
