The Costa girls lacrosse team and softball team are working with See’s Candy to raise holiday funds for their teams and the school.
Both the JV and varsity softball teams are participating in their annual holiday fundraiser by selling boxes of See’s Candy. The team is selling boxes of candy that range in price from $10 to $49.
“[While] there’s not an amount that each player has to sell, [each player] has to sell something,” junior and varsity softball player Heather Roth said. “The candy is then shipped directly to the [customers] after they order it online.”
The Costa softball team has two annual fundraisers that raise money for the team: the See’s holiday fundraiser and the MBX parent softball tournament. Both raise funds for the softball team and help it to have a strong program.
“The holiday fundraisers are not our main fundraiser, but we do tend to bring in a couple thousand dollars,” Roth said. “Our fundraisers pay for the uniforms, umpire fees, and transportation.”
Because each player brings in its own sales, the girls do this fundraiser individually. However, they have other fundraisers each year where they’re able to work together and spend more time with one another while raising money.
“Being on the team is awesome, [although] this specific fundraiser is pretty individual,” Roth said. “The team has pretty fun energy, and that definitely helps us stay relaxed on game days.”
Girls lacrosse is also holding its annual See’s Candy holiday fundraiser lasting from Nov. 24 to Dec. 3. Players are not required to sell a certain amount but are highly encouraged to sell as many as possible to support the program. The fundraiser is entirely online this year.
“This year and last year we’ve moved the fundraiser online, and it’s much easier to manage,” girls lacrosse booster club president Dan Rodrigues said. “[Prior to COVID-19], players would go door-to-door in their neighborhood or collect orders from friends and family directly. The whole team had to pick up their candy orders at one location and was responsible for delivery to the people that bought from them.”
Girls lacrosse also raised money at the Hometown Fair earlier this year in addition to its current holiday fundraiser. Fundraisers such as these help cover coaches stipends, transportation, uniforms and tournament entry fees for the team.
“Overall, fundraising for girls lacrosse this fall is going great,” Rodrigues said. “We had our best Hometown Fair ever, followed by winning the PTSA contest for program participation at the Sketchers Walk. Hopefully, the positive momentum continues during the last hours of our See’s sales.”
Not only does this fundraiser help support the program, according to junior Katie Witherell, it is a great way to connect with people leading into the holiday season.
“My favorite part of the See’s candy fundraiser is getting to wish people happy holidays when I reach out to them,” Witherell said. “It’s a great way to kick off the holiday season.”
