“I think we came out from the start with energy which caused us to have momentum for the first quarter.” said senior Winslow Smith. “However, we started to let them get ahead off of rebounds.” The Mustangs were down by nine early on and were able to score eight more points off Redondo’s defense.

Costa was down by one at the end of the first quarter. By halftime, RUHS was still in the lead, 23-17.

“I think the team had some great runs and plays,” said junior Brianna Bryker. “But I think we have to communicate better on both offense and defense. I also think we can improve on being more aggressive.”

Redondo scored 15 points off the Mustangs defense while the battle continued throughout the third quarter. Both teams were defending the ball in different ways, yet at the start of the fourth quarter Redondo was in the lead, 38-25.

“In the 4th quarter, we decided to switch to man,” said senior Winslow Smith, “and pressure them as much as possible, which led to a few fast breaks.”

During the fourth quarter, Redondo increased its defensive intensity by blocking the Mustangs shots, allowing Costa to only score nine points in the last quarter. Costa kept trying to defend but ultimately lost, 47-34.

“I thought I played well overall,” said Gedion. “I could have gotten more offensive rebounds to help my teammates, but I got beat on defense. Otherwise, I thought I played really well.”

The Mustangs’ next game will take place tonight at Costa at 6 p.m., where they will face the Culver City Centaurs. According to junior Heather Roth, the team has high hopes. The team now has an overall record of 14-4.

“For the next game we need to bring the intensity and effort,” said Roth. “We need to play with an increased aggression and desire to win. In practice we need to focus on our defensive rotations, as well as boxing out and being confident in our offense sets. Right now we’re dejected because we lost, but there’s definitely an increased desire to win because we hate losing.”
