Girls varsity soccer tied for Bay League on Jan. 31, despite losing to Redondo, 2-1.
The first time these two teams met was in the finals of the South Tournament on Dec. 20, where Costa lost with a score of 2-1.
“We were fighting for bragging rights, but tensions were still high, and it made us want to win even more, ” senior Alexa Vogel said.
The Jan. 31 game opened with a goal from senior captain Ellie Weisenberg. It was the only goal scored in the first half of the game and gave the Mustangs a cushion heading into the second half.
“We had already clinched first place in Bay League after the PV win,” Vogel said. “This game was just about preventing a tie for first.” The Mustangs previously beat he Sea Kings, 1-0, on Jan. 28.
Redondo scored 15 minutes into the second half off of a free kick to tie the game. The Sea Hawks then scored once again with two minutes remaining to win the game. Although the Sea Hawks beat the Mustangs during the final game of Bay League, the two teams tied with PV, causing a three-way tie.
“It definitely was not a fun loss, but I think all of us were mature enough to be good sports about it.” Vogel said. “We also recognized how well we played as a team despite the score, and we’re proud of ourselves for that.”
The Mustangs, however, were able to beat Culver City, Santa Monica, Peninsula, and PV to come out 4-1 in Bay League, giving them a share of the Bay League title with both Palos Verdes and Redondo Union.
“It felt great winning Bay League,” Weisenberg said. “I’m so grateful to be a part of this team with such a talented group of girls.”
The team’s overall record stands at 13-3 as it looks ahead to winning CIF once again. Costa girls soccer last won CIF in 2020 and, according to Weisenberg, they are hoping to finish in first again. The team’s first round playoff game was against Marina and took place at Costa at 3 p.m. Saturday. Information regarding this game was not available at the time of printing.
“It felt great winning Bay League, and I am hoping to make it far in the playoffs, and it would be amazing if we could be CIF champions this year,” Weisenberg said. “We are going to give these other teams a good challenge, and I am excited to see how well we do.”
