On Sept. 30th, 2022, the Mira Costa Football team held a tailgate in front of the gym before its game against Culver City High School. The tailgate included food and a performance from the Costa cheer team. According to Katie Farquharson, a Costa parent and member of the tailgate committee, the tailgate sold out immediately.
“The sales were phenomenal,” Farquharson said. “We sold out for the first time and we sold out early which was so great. I thank everybody who bought a ticket for the Community support.”
The event served food options such as hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, mac and cheese, and salads. There were also a variety of drinks like water and sodas. All of the food was provided for free, as long as you purchased a ticket.
“The food is incredible here,” freshman Ryan Achuff said. “My favorites are definitely the burgers and the mac and cheese. This whole tailgate is so cool and I am so excited for the game.”
Along with the Costa students who attended the tailgate, there were many staff members and parents, along with other students in MBUSD. Police Officer Torres, was seen walking around the tailgate, talking to students and other staff members. Having Officer Torres there to supervise and also have fun allowed a safe and fun environment.
“This is a great event,” Officer Torres said. “We have around 400 people down here eating and about to enjoy a great game against Culver City. I love how we are bringing the whole community here.”
According to Jen Fenton, a Costa parent and candidate for the MBUSD school board, the experience for the younger kids and their parents was great. Students in elementary and middle school were able to attend the tailgate. This event allowed younger students to experience what Costa has to offer before they attend high school.
“The tailgate was phenomenal,” Fenton said. “Between the Tailgate and the football game, Friday was definitely set up to create a positive experience for everyone on campus.”
In addition to the food, the Mira Costa Cheer team performed their ‘Fight Song’ routine. According to junior cheerleader Zoe Oliver, the young girls loved the performance and were smiling the whole time.
“Cheering at the tailgate on Friday was an eye opener as I got to see how many friends and families we have supporting Mira Costa,” Oliver said. “I got to stand by my closest friends and perform our ‘Fight Song’ in front of all the supporting families. There were many young girls who look up to us as cheerleaders, and getting to speak with them was a really cute moment.”
The tailgate was a much different experience than the past few years, as it had more people than ever. According to Fenton, the experience was awesome for all of the community members and the costa students who attended the tailgate by coming together and having a good time.
“The Tailgate was an opportunity to bring together students, families, community members, and alumni all in support of our Mustangs,” Fenton said. “With over 400 people in attendance, the event was a huge success!”
