Costa held its ninth annual Hall of Fame assembly on Sept. 30 in the auditorium to honor the six new 2022 Hall of Fame honorees.
The assembly started with the pledge of allegiance, followed by Costa’s Alma Mater performed by the choir. Principal Dr. Karina Gerger then introduced the six alumni: John Bernards, Chuck Currier, Daniel Ennis, Brad Haga, Bill Kelly, and Le Valley Pattison. Preceding this, Activities Director Lisa Claypoole spoke of her experiences in high school.
“With the help of our administrative staff, MBEF, and a couple of other organizations, we prepared who was going to be elected into the Hall of Fame,” said junior Margot Powell. “[We also] prepared the day for them.”
To be nominated, honorees had to fill out a one to two- page application that was posted on Costa’s website last spring. After submitting the application, there was a six- week review process, that consisted of a selection committee that chose the nominees for the past two years.
“Once you’re nominated, you may not be selected this year,” said Claypoole. “But you can still be selected next year because typically, they try not to induct more than five to eight people.”
Each honoree was introduced by two students who spoke of the alumni’s time at Costa as well as what they have accomplished sinc0e graduating. The electees then gave a speech that highlighted why they were elected into the Hall of Fame.
“I introduced Mr. Kelly at the assembly,” said senior Jack Clarke. “He was a member of the class of 1953 and was a three-sport athlete during his time at Costa. Besides just introducing our nominees during the assembly, we spent the rest of the day with them and filled them in on everything that has changed at Costa since they graduated.”
Other than speaking at the assembly, honorees received a plaque, certificate, Costa swag, and a gift certificate to the merchandise stand located at the football games. They also received a certificate that will let them into any Costa-sponsored event for free.
“I introduced Bill Kelly,” said senior Skylar Maycon. “I found him interesting because he was in ASB like me at Costa and now contributes a lot to the educational system.”
Several students, including junior Margot Powell, senior Madison Calder, senior Reece Riley, senior Jack Clarke, and senior Skylar Maycon, were given the job of planning the event, and other students were responsible for setting up the library for the nominees. In addition to this,
students who introduced the honorees gave them a tour of the campus and answered any questions they had. According to Claypoole, the students were leaders across campus who related to the alumni in some way.
“Being able to connect with alumni, especially those who I shared interests with, was definitely one of the best parts of the entire day,” said Clarke. “Being able to learn from people who had graduated from Costa and achieved success in the world was a beneficial thing for me and my fellow student-hosts as well as the student body as a whole.”
