On Apr. 20th, the Mustang Mall was alive with the sounds of music and excitement as the school’s annual event, Costachella, kicked off from 10:23 to 11:13 during office hours. The festival event drew a large crowd of students, teachers and staff who came together to support the talented student bands and sustainability initiatives.

The ‘Sax Pack’, Costa’s student-run saxophone group, set the tone for Costachella 2023 with their performance of Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off”. Four talented members of the group treated festival-goers to an engaging performance: sophomore Logan Elliot (left, soprano), sophomore Colin Freelin (second to left, tenor), junior Shan Kwak (third to left, soprano), and junior Miles McPhee (right, alto).

This year’s theme of ‘Sustainability’ inspired students to show school spirit by wearing festival and eco-friendly clothing. The event was made possible by generous sponsors including MBX, PTSA, TedX MB, CPK, Handel’s, Village Runner, and Fresh Brothers.

“I had a blast at Costachella this year. It’s great to see our school community coming together to support both the arts and the environment,” said sophomore Tabitha Aarnson. “The booths were really informative about sustainable living, and I loved every minute of the event!”

Members of St. Michael’s Project were also busy running a spin the wheel booth, encouraging attendees to learn about sustainable living and upcycling. Festival-goers had a chance to win eco-friendly prizes like bracelets while gaining valuable knowledge about how they can help protect the environment.

The event was made even more exciting by the raffle prizes generously donated by the sponsors, including gift cards, TedX surprises, and metal straws. The different club booths also offered plenty of fun activities and games. Heart Club invited guests to paint rocks, while Grades of Green had a spin-the-wheel game. Link Crew had chalk for drawing and matching flowers for friends to wear, as well as a game of cornhole.

At the compost booth, attendees were greeted with separate bins for trash, recycling, and compost, as well as free metal straws to encourage sustainable drinking habits. The booth provided an opportunity for festival-goers to learn about waste reduction and composting while enjoying the festivities at Costachella.

“Everyone works together and I’m glad that we can culminate the power of education to create a better future for all,” said eleventh grade English teacher Mrs. Cook. “I’m proud to see our students coming together to celebrate sustainability, and learn about eco-friendly practices.”
