Juniors Chun, Clark, Hiatt, Jester, Stasso are selected to represent Costa as State Delegates

These Juniors were nominated then picked to attend the prestigious Boys State and Girls State programs.

This summer Juniors Alex Chun, Dash Clark, Charles Hiatt, Dean Stasso, and Katherine Jester will take part in a one week program at California State University Sacramento. In this program, they will encounter roles of civic responsibility and experience how to work in a government system. 

“I chose to be a part of this because it seemed like a good opportunity to learn more about our country and gain more experience with real-world problems.” said Stasso ”I hope to learn more about California’s government and how to work with others to make it better.”

To become a state delegate students were recommended by staff for their dedication to Costa, involvement in the school, leadership skills, and academic achievements. After being nominated they later were interviewed by an American Legion representative. The American Legion is an organization by war-time veterans that focuses on mentoring the youth in patriotism and promoting strong national security.

“I hope to learn how our government works and how to best help our citizens.” said Hiatt “The government controls all of our daily lives so it is extremely important to understand how it functions”

There are two different events being held one for boys, Boys State and for girls, Girls State. Jester will be the only girl representing Costa this year. In Girls State, Jester will be attending a course about American government and go through governmental experiences like elections. They will work to create their ideal community based on the values of the participants. 

“I feel so honored to be the sole female representative for Costa and I am so grateful for this opportunity! It is extremely empowering to have been chosen to represent our school on the state level” said Jester ”I chose to apply for Girls State because it appeals to the desire to learn, will allow me to exercise my leadership skills, and will enable me to collaborate with like-minded peers. Also I am excited about collaborating with a diverse group of young women who share my desire to learn and to lead.”

In the Boys State program, they learn the importance of franchised citizens. They mainly focus on the structures of state and county governments. Within the week programs the activities they will take part in are; legislative sessions, court proceedings, law-enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chores and recreational programs.

“I hope to gain a better understanding of issues going on in our country and to see the bigger picture of America more clearly.” said Stasso “I expect to collaborate with other high school students and learn what their perspectives are on [modern] issues.”
