The Grades of Green Club organized Costa’s Earth Week April 17-21 to create daily challenges for Costa students to participate in.
Each day held its own challenge, including “Meatless Monday,” “Transportation Tuesday,” “Waste Less Wednesday,” “Thrift Thursday” and “Fun Film Friday.” According to junior Grades of Green Club President Claire Koerber, the Grades of Green team ran a social media campaign on Instagram to promote each of these activities.
“Earth Week is a way of making people aware of the importance of protecting our planet,” said Koerber. “It helps us spread awareness about the impact we all have on the environment and helps to educate our community about the simple changes in their every day habits that can allow them to benefit the Earth.”
Monday’s challenge encouraged students to bring a meatless lunch or buy a vegetarian meal from the school cafeteria. “Transportation Tuesday” encouraged students to reduce air pollution by walking, biking, or carpooling to school. On Wednesday, students were encouraged to bring a trash-free lunch. Thursday’s challenge was to go second-hand shopping and Friday’s challenge was to watch a documentary to learn about sustainable living.
“I hope Earth Week brings students the awareness of the effect we have on our environment and the importance of making small changes now in order to make a huge difference later,” said Koerber.
Preceding Earth Week, Koerber’s club participated in Costachella on April 20 and held an activity to show people how long items take to decompose. In addition to this, the green team also held a clothing swap April 14-15.
“I thought the most successful day at Costa was Costachella, which Link Crew organized,” said Koerber. “I was glad that they chose sustainability as the theme because it coincided nicely with Earth week.”
