Comedy Sportz’s team Red and team Blue played against each other for the league’s first match of the year in the small theater at 7 p.m. on Oct. 5.
In the first half of the match, seniors Abby Brown, Siena Frederick, Caden Coons and Parker Stickney played on team Red against Blue team’s seniors Jackson Yollin, Margot Powell and Chris Halkias as well as junior Chloe Estrin. The Blue team won the first game of the match called “Expert Challenge,” a monologuing game where each team competes to perform in the playing field. After, the Red team won eight points in “Curfew.”
“It’s honestly just the best feeling to be improving with my best friends and watching them be goofy and amazing on stage,” said Estrin.
Next, team Red picked the game “My Movie,” but was down one point after team Blue’s win in “Stunt Double.” Both teams participated in “Garfield,” leaving team Red up one point, 22-21, after the first half.
“I loved ‘My Movie’ because it’s one of my favorite games in practice, so getting to do it in front of an audience and hear their feedback and laughter makes it even more enjoyable,” said Brown.
After intermission, both teams switched out their players, with seniors Devan Malik and Brown, junior Hayley Dohner and sophomore Emily Hucul on team Red against juniors Jaxon
Stroyke and Zoë Meyer, and seniors Chris Halkias and Margot Powell on team Blue. Estrin and Malik revealed a new tradition where they introduce their respective teams by grade, in addition to the comical introductions provided by The Voice, a Comedy Sportz player who announces the score after each round.
“My favorite part of the match was honestly the entirety of ‘The Dating Game’ because I had to play Wendy Williams and Margot didn’t know who that was, so it was just a hilarious struggle,” said Stroyke.
Blue team won in the first game of the second half, “Beastie Rap,” where players rap rhymes to a steady beat. The Blue team continued being in the lead after three points in “Survivor.” Blue team’s “The Dating Game” lost against “Dime Story.”
“The best game would have to be ‘Survivor;’ the standing ovation for Jaxon after he completed the final scene said it all,” said Estrin. “I was literally crying because it was hysterical and perfect, and that’s the sort of incredible energy you get from a match performing in front of an audience.”
Both teams rivaled for the victory in the final game of “Object Freeze” where players improvised with props provided by the audience, including a leaf blower, lip gloss and a water pitcher. Yollin, The Voice for the second half, announced the final score of 48-42 , leaving team Blue victorious.
“I think [Malik] did a great job at the match because he’s just honestly really funny,” said Stroyke. “I loved getting to see his impressive array of characters and accents.”
