XoXo, Ava: Ava draws inspiration from The Mel Robbins Podcast

By Ava Nicols

Editor-in-Chief

I was on a walk listening to my favorite podcast, shoutout Mel Robbins, when I stopped completely to rewind what she said.

“Thinking will not create belief in yourself.”

One thing I love about this podcast is that Mel really tells it to you straight, and this is something I think everyone could benefit from.

Thinking about all the things we could be doing in our lives does not manifest results or stimulate motivation, rather incite self-doubt that causes us to overthink things and decisions to the point where performance is affected more than if we had just trusted ourselves.

For high-school students especially, it is a normal tendency for people to struggle with doubt. During high-pressure situations or work environments this emotion is often amplified causing the success of others to feel threatening. Taking this into consideration and looking back at my past four years at Costa, I wish it didn’t take me as long as it did to feel confident in my accomplishments.

When you think about it, putting the thoughts of what you want or need to do into action is always the hardest part because you don’t have any way of knowing if things will work out or not. But, if you at least try and get the ball rolling you are one step closer than you were before you started.

Of course I can say this in retrospect now—and with the help of Mel’s bluntness. Being self aware and eager and proud of the progress and the little wins is something that I feel excited to share with the hope that I can incite others to feel the same.

It’s bittersweet to know that my time as a columnist and leader on this paper is coming to an end but the skills that I have developed throughout my time here will only boost me forward onto the next step.

Until May,

Xoxo
