Sam Reinehr is not your average freshman. After testing out of 2nd and 7th grade, Reinehr has entered Costa as a 12-year-old freshman, with a challenging course load and a spot on the wrestling team.
In his first year of high school, Reinehr has already taken on a difficult schedule. A few of his hardest courses include pre-calculus, chemistry, AP music theory and Latin.
“Remembering things comes really easily to me, but only if it is something that interests me,” Reinehr said. “I really enjoy math, and to me it is an honor to be able to attend Mira Costa so early in my life. I know taking classes at Costa will lead to future success in life.”
Reinehr has a passion for Costa wrestling. He joined the wrestling team last summer and decided to stick with it through his freshman year. Due to its no-tryouts policy, the team consists of roughly 70 wrestlers, of which at least 30 are freshmen boys.
“I think that it is awesome that Sam is already taking classes at Mira Costa,” senior Kelsie Martel said. “His intelligence will really help represent our school.”
Reinehr also has a photographic memory. He has the ability to visualize information after he has seen it. It takes him only one time of learning something to have it stick with him forever.
“I find it interesting that someone so young is taking classes that upperclassmen take,” sophomore Wesley Smart said.
Reinehr’s strongest subject in school is math. He is currently competing in a competition run by the United States of America Mathematics Talent Search. It consists of five extremely difficult problems, one of which takes almost a month to complete. Reinehr is also competing in an upcoming math worldwide competition run by the American Regional Mathematics League.
“Sam has really inspired me to be the best student that I can possibly be. He is already competing in an international math competition, a difficult task that few kids accomplish,” junior Kira Hagaman said.
Although Reinehr has a busy life in and outside of class, he manages to keep his stress level relatively low. He makes sure to make time to do the things he enjoys such as video games and going on the computer.
“It is pretty amazing that Sam is only 12 years old and is already a freshman at Mira Costa high school,” Smart said.
