For months now, The girls’ Mira Costa High School bathrooms have been short mirrors, and students have been expressing their frustrations towards this issue. To some, it may seem like a minor problem, but not being able to just take a quick glance in the mirror can be frustrating.
Without mirrors in the restrooms, students are left feeling self conscious, wondering if there’s something stuck in their teeth, if their hair is messed up, or if something’s on their face. Besides the basic touch up, mirrors are used for practical things that can be a necessity to some others. A lot of students wear contacts, or glasses, which they may want to check regularly, and when it comes to putting them back in or readjusting, mirrors are a necessity. With no mirrors, students are more inclined to reach for their phones during class, which can disrupt learning time and is disrespectful to teachers.
”Before I put a mini mirror in my backpack, I was constantly having to check my phone camera,” said Sophomore Keeley Maloney. “It’s aggravating to not be able to just take a quick look during lunch or between my classes.”
Theories are floating around about the reason for the hold up on replacing the mirrors. The most common reason being the school’s budget- another being that the staff would like to minimize students stalling in the bathrooms. Although both are good reasons, both also have solutions. Any capable person could start a fundraiser to replace the mirrors; for example, those on ASB, who have the ability to advocate for Costa’s students. Sign out sheets are already in place to regulate how much time students spend in restrooms.
For now, students are left hoping Costa will listen to their concerns, and make the change. Bringing the mirrors back would be a simple fix to complicated concerns..
