Girl Scout cookies have been a cherished part of American culture for decades, anticipated each year by cookie-lovers of the sweet, crunchy treats. Whether you’re partial to Thin Mints, Samoas, or Tagalongs, buying Girl Scout Cookies has been a beloved tradition for generations. However, in recent years, there has been a significant rise in prices of these iconic cookies. As the price continues to climb, many are left wondering: are Girl Scout Cookies still worth it?
In the past, a box of Girl Scout Cookies cost $5 each ($6 for the gluten-free toffee tastics), but now the prices have jumped to $6 or even $7 per box in some areas. This increase is not just a small adjustment, but a noticeable jump that has many wondering if the cost is getting out of hand.
“I’ve always always bought [Girl Scout] cookies every year, but with the price going up, I can’t help but feel like it’s getting too expensive,” said senior Isabella Escobedo. “A couple of my friends are Girl Scouts and I love supporting them, but it’s becoming a bigger commitment to buy them each year.”
The price increase is particularly tough for families trying to buy multiple boxes, as there is no deal when you buy more boxes. This makes it harder for larger families to enjoy the tradition without breaking the bank.
“It’s hard to keep buying so many boxes when they keep getting more pricey,” said senior Miranda Johnson, a long-time cookie buyer. “I used to buy a few boxes every year, but now I have to pick and choose.”
Even some of the Girl Scouts themselves have been feeling the impact of the price increase when it comes to sales. Many have noticed that customers are uncertain when it comes to purchasing boxes, and the lack of funds makes it more difficult for the scouts to reach their sales targets and fund activities for their troops. The increase in price is affecting both the buyers and sellers, changing the dynamic of the annual cookie sales.
“I get why the prices are going up, but it’s a little awkward when people hesitate to buy cookies because of it,” said senior Cynthia Sam. “We still want to raise money for our troop, but it’s becoming harder with the cost going up.”
Though the price increase may be necessary to cover rising costs, it takes away from the fun and affordability that made buying Girl Scout Cookies special in the past.
Ultimately, rising costs have been making Girl Scout Cookies a tougher sell for some buyers. Their value depends on how much people care about tradition and supporting the Girl Scouts. While some may hesitate, others see the experience and cause as worth the cost.
