Junior Nathan makes cookie business

When junior Kate Nathan isn’t busy with school, she’s in the kitchen whipping up batches of experimental cookies.

Nathan has been baking since she was young, routinely running bale sales for pocket change. She official dove into the world of business last August with the creation of her Kate’s Cookies business.

“I started a cookie-selling business because baking has always been kind of a passion for me,” Nathan said. “I started off just selling to my family friends, so I thought I would just branch that out and make it an official thing.”

Nathan’s love for baking began early, inspired by hours spent watching cooking shows and baking with her dad. Those formative experiences shaped the type of baker she is today. “Growing up, I loved watching Kids Baking Championship and that definitely inspires how I bake.”

Now, Nathan bakes two to three days a week, making around five batches per session and selling to about six or seven customers at a time. Her flavors range from classics like chocolate chip and snickerdoodle to more creative combinations like raspberry chocolate chip.

“Normally I’ll change a flavor each week,” Nathan said. “Crumbl [Cookies] is definitely a big inspiration for me, I love doing similar stuff. I also get inspiration from scrolling Pinterest and Instagram Reels.”

While cookies are her specialty, Nathan has been experimenting with more advanced bakes. For her, it’s not enough for her desserts to just taste good, so she’s holding off on adding them to her menu until she’s perfected the recipe.

“I’ve been trying to make macarons lately, but that’s been a lot harder. I’m working with four different recipes, and every time it’s good, but not great,” Nathan explained. “I’d rather it be at its best level.”

It seems like Nathan’s perfectionist baking mentality has paid off. Her cookies have already earned a loyal fan base and even one bite seems like enough to convert classmates into customers

“They’re good” Junior Scarlet Hanna said. “I’m pleasantly surprised. Soft, buttery, it taste like something a professional would make.
