The National Honor Society will hold its annual induction ceremony to honor students in the small theater by the end of this month.
The induction of NHS will be held in the small theater, but the date remains undecided due to a mix-up in the paperwork, according to NHS advisor Stacy Cabrera. This year, NHS will induct 100 juniors and seniors at Mira Costa.
“I think it’s important for the idea of recognizing excellence in the school,” Cabrera said. “We recognize everyone who has been accepted.”
The National Honor Society honors students who stand out with excellent volunteer work, community services, extra activities, honors and awards, work experiences, and an outstanding GPA. According to NHS president and senior Bhattacharyay, only junior and seniors are allowed to be members of this program.
“This year we’re going to focus on environmental work,” Bhattacharyay said. “Last year we had a fundraising for international aid and for providing food for African families in disaster relief zones.”
This year, the greatest change in the ceremony is that it will take place in the evening rather than in the morning as it has in past years. According to NHS member, Olivia Everhard, inductees get a white flower, Dr. Dale and Dr. Matthews give a speech and there is a candle lighting ceremony.
“The ceremony was nice and well organized and made me feel like I was really a part of a selective group of people,” Everhard said.
The main audience at the ceremony will be the inductees, their parents and district board members. Cabrera will present inductees with the certificates. The ceremony is usually 45 minutes long. After the inductees are seated, a speech will be read, a tradition for every National Honor Society across the nation.
“I’m looking forward this year to being able to be part of this community and being able to give back to the society,” Everhard said.
The first NHS meeting of the school year was on Friday, October 30th in the small theater at Mira Costa. According to NHS Vice President, Tooba Wasi, students talked about the upcoming induction ceremony. The next meeting will be in December and members will plan projects for the school year.
“This year, I’m looking forward to being officially inducted into NHS and being able to give back to the community and make our chapter of NHS as efficient as we can,” Wasi said.
The celebration is normally closer to the beginning of the school year, but with new facilities and office hour scheduling, the ceremony was postponed until later. However students still meet for NHS, according to NHS treasurer and senior, Danielle Major.
“I’m excited to see all of the juniors and seniors joining NHS and speaking my part during the induction. It’s a great ceremony for the parents to see also,” Major said.
