The Mira Costa Associated Student Body concluded the Oct. 19-23 Homecoming week with the Oct. 24 Homecoming dance.
Throughout Homecoming week, students dressed up for ASB’s theme days, which ASB created to increase school spirit. The themes were meant to increase school spirit and they were ‘Merica Monday, Tie-Dye Tuesday, Class War Wednesday, Team Thursday, and Super Stampede Friday.
“Homecoming is always a week with the most school spirit of the entire school year,” ASB member and sophomore Sarah Childs said. “It is awesome to see Homecoming Court members show all their school spirit through their costumes.”
The Homecoming Court couples were seniors Kit Chavers and Tyler Knudson, Molly Dvorkin and Kevin Vartan, Nickole Garlitos and Callum Schelly, Rachel Kay and Zack Zeoli, Danielle Major and Shubhayu Bhattacharyay, Pooja Nagpal and Sam Sturges, Maddy Silver and Cole Keefer and Hannah Watkins and Declan Wright. The couples wore themed costumes throughout the week with their partner. Themes for Homecoming Court throughout the week included decades, things that go together, and dynamic movie duos.
“On Tuesday, the theme was things that go together, so I dressed up as a fraternity pledge and my partner, Pooja, was a lemon,” Sturges said. “We thought it was funny, and it was fun to come up with costume ideas.”
Seniors voted on Oct. 20, the second day of Homecoming Week, for king and queen. To further increase Costa school spirit, the Costa cheer and dance team performed at the Oct. 21 Homecoming pep rally. Homecoming Court members also performed their self-choreographed dance.
“All of court practiced and rehearsed the dance for the past two weeks which was stressful at first but a ton of fun,”Kay said. “All of us on Homecoming Court bonded a ton.”
Votes for king and queen were through ballot. The ballots featured a short biography of the court members including who nominated them, and their hobbies and interests. ASB crowned Sam Sturges and Maddy Silver as Homecoming king and queen during halftime of the Oct. 23 homecoming football game, versus Inglewood High.
“I am honored and surprised to be this year’s Homecoming king to say the least,” Sturges said. “I love every single person on the court and I would have been happy if anybody had won.”
The Homecoming dance concluded Homecoming week, in The Fischer Gym. This year’s theme was “Dancin’ Through the Decades.” At the dance, Court members performed their self-choreographed dance for the final time.
“The Homecoming dance had a great turn out this year,” Childs said. “The abundance of school spirit this year made students excited for Homecoming and the dance was a lot of fun.”
