Mira Costa’s boys tennis team defeated Long Beach Poly 18-0 at Costa on February 23 in a non-conference scrimmage match, with top performances by senior singles player Alex Gaal and senior doubles players Jeremy Chung and freshman Matthew Poe.
In his sets, Gaal stayed consistent and strong throughout each round. He dominated both of his games, 6-2. Ching and Poe also swept their opponents, both ending 6-1. According to Gaal, this match reflects on how Costa will do this season.
“I think this scrimmage is indicative of how we will play this season,” says Gaal. “I’m very hopeful for this season and I’m glad that we did so well today.”
This match does not go on Costa’s record because it was a scrimmage. The team’s first match will be on Tuesday, March 1, against Loyola at Mira Costa. According to Coach Ciasulli, the team uses scrimmage matches like these to improve for Tuesday.
“We use each match to get better,” says Ciasulli. “I expect that Loyola will be a tougher match than today’s, but I still expect to win.”
