Mira Costa’s Associated Student Body hosted the third annual Sadie Hawkins Dance and Game Night on March 19 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Torrance to bring together Costa Students for a night filled with dancing, games, raffle prizes, photos and snacks, along with contests to reward couples wearing creative costumes.
According to ASB commissioner of entertainment, junior Jamie Hoffman, close to 500 students attended this year’s Sadie Hawkins Dance and Game Night, making it a very successful night. Ticket prices ranged from a single ticket for $34 for early purchase with an ASB sticker to couples tickets for $80 for later purchases with no ASB sticker.
“What I like about Sadies is that everybody is absolutely welcome,” Costa’s activities director Lisa Claypoole said. “It doesn’t have to be a couple thing, it can be a group thing. It’s a fun time and when you’re at a casual dance, people dance more. It’s a much more easy going night.”
According to ASB commissioner of entertainment, senior Kendall Douglas, students especially enjoy the costume themed aspect of Sadies, making it one of the most successful dances at MCHS. Sadies is a chance for girls to ask guys as their date and during the dance take photos together in front of backdrops.
“I think the Sadie Hawkins Dance is more popular than other school dances because it is different in the sense that the girls are in charge of asking a date,” ASB commissioner of elections, sophomore Breegan Knudson said. “Everyone gets really into their costumes and works to make them unique.”
Sadies Dance incorporated Costa’s Annual Game Night, a casino-themed area featuring craft tables, a spinny wheel, roulette and blackjack. Everyone was given play money, which could be traded for raffle tickets for the chance to win a variety of prizes including Girl Scout cookies, Swell bottles and free Prom tickets.
“Game night has been something we’ve combined with Sadies for a few years now and it seems to bring another fun aspect to the night other than just dancing,” Douglas said. “It also gives people that normally don’t attend dances the chance to have fun.”
In past years, The Automobile Driving Museum and Portofino Hotel & Marina, were too small for the amount of students that attended. This year, event planners organized the layout of a large ballroom at the DoubleTree Hotel to have a dance floor in the center surrounded by games and refreshments against the walls.
“Next year I am excited to see even more people show up,” Hoffman said. “This year Sadie’s reached ASB’s expectations and in some cases even exceeded them. I hope next year we can find a venue that holds even more people so for the ones who missed out can come next year.”
