Being a pro-skater boy and landing covers of magazines can be accomplished by anybody, and this time it’s a Costa grad.
In March of 2016, Mason Silva, a 2015 Costa graduate, was featured on the 144th issue of “The Skateboard Mag”. Already a popular local skater, Silva’s featured cover photo only increased his popularity within the skateboard scene.
“It’s always a big deal to be on the cover of a magazine, and especially one specific to skateboarding, for me personally,” Silva said. “Being on the cover of the magazine was so surreal and something I had always dreamt of.”
Recently, Silva has been working on a full-length video with his skateboarding team and sponsor, Element, a popular skateboarding brand. Silva and his teammates will all be featured in the video with sections dedicated to each of them. The video is set to be released at the end of 2017 after a year of filming in various locations with different people.
“This upcoming film is something that I plan on dedicating all of my time to this year,” Silva said. “I am extremely happy to be a part of this experience and I think the video will be a great experience for me.”
During a typical week, Silva tries to skate as much as he can throughout each day and usually skates around five days a week. Along with skating practically everyday, Silva tries to take as many photos and videos of himself skating as possible to have excess media for his Instagram and other social media platforms.
“If I was to give any advice to younger skateboarders out there it would be to have as much fun as possible because that’s the only thing that matters,” Silva said. “Skateboarding is a great thing to be a apart of and when you join a team, you gain life-long friends.”
Silva’s freshman year of highschool was when his skateboarding career took off. With close friends also pursuing skateboarding, it was an easy transition from a hobby to a possible career, Silva said. Skateboarding is a passion of Silva’s that he hopes to continue doing for as long as possible, he said.
“I hope to pursue skateboarding for as long as possible, it really depends on how long my body lets me endure this sport,” Silva said. “Skateboarding is honestly the best thing ever and I hope to do it for as long as possible.”
Due to conflicts between traveling for skateboarding competitions and school, Silva was able to transfer to an independent study program which allowed him more freedom to pursue his budding career, Silva said. His brother also helped his hobby turn into a career by pushing him to do what he loves, he said.
“My family has always been so supportive about everything to do with skateboarding,” Silva said. “I couldn’t thank them more for everything that they have done for me to help me and my passion for skateboarding.”
