Costa Boys Tennis victorious over Corona del Mar in close match

The Mira Costa boys tennis team defeated Corona del Mar High School, 9(81 games)-9(71 games) on Monday, May 14 during the quarterfinals of the California Interscholastic Federation southern section playoffs. The top performers of the match included senior Evan Fortier winning all of his sets, 6-2, 6-1, and 6-3.

The Mustangs kept their winning streak alive due to junior Matthew Poh defeating his opponents 6-3 and 6-2.  Doubles pair, including junior Kyle Sillman and freshman Julien Lilla won three of their sets 7-6, 6-1, and 6-3.

“A historic win for the Mira Costa tennis program, the Mustangs reached the semifinals of the Division one playoffs for the first time,” head coach Joe Ciasulli said.

The Mustangs are currently 22-1 overall and 9-1 in Bay League.  Costa will head off into the CIF-ss semifinals on Wednesday, May 16 against the winner of the Harvard-Westlake and Woodbridge match that took place on May 14.

“It has been the same issue all season,” Ciasulli said. “Our singles players are very strong but, we have to keep improving our doubles play.”
