Costa art students bring fall festivities to life through creative papier-mâché pumpkins, student merchandise, and small businesses for tonight’s Art Night.
Students crafted papier-mâché pumpkins using a cardboard base, then carefully layered plaster and paper mache to build a smooth, sturdy surface. Once dried, the pumpkins were brought to life with bold colors. The pumpkins are inspired by artist Yayoi Kusama, known for her fascination with polka dots and repetition. Kusama’s playful patterns were echoed in the designs.
“It’s amazing how something like paper and plaster can turn into a piece that feels like it belongs in a gallery,” junior Sage Meidroth said.
In addition to the papier-mâché pumpkins, Art Night will feature merchandise designed by students, who were voted for the best designs in their class. The winners, junior Sage Meidroth, and seniors Tessa Yi, Maia Rocha and Jane Brownsen’s designs were printed onto tote bags, hoodies, and shirts that will be sold at the event.
“It’s so cool to see our artwork turned into something people can actually wear and use,” said senior Tessa Yi.
Art Night will also highlight local small businesses, fostering community engagement with student artists. One vendor is senior Tessa Belfor, who runs a thriving sticker business. Belfor is passionate about her craft, drawing each sticker by hand. What began as a hobby, sketching designs on her tablet, grew as her blend of art and technology caught people’s attention.
“I’ve always loved art and technology,” Tessa said. “When I combined them, I knew I had to start this business.”
The Art Night event will run tonight before the Homecoming football game from 5-7 PM outside room 109.
