Music is a way to connect communities. Young individuals like the members of the alternative-rock band, Hiatus, are making waves through their passion for music. Mira Costa Junior, Hayden Sandefur, and her fellow band members Allison Lee and Hudson Grahber have been playing music together since March 2024. The Members all go to different schools, showing how a love for music can unite communities.
Junior Hayden Sandefur is the group’s guitarist, and she’s been playing for eight years. She explained how passionate she is about music, and how the phenomena of good music can create an indescribable effect.
“It’s lowkey like a drug,” Sandefur said. “The dopamine boost from playing an instrument goes crazy.”
Sophomore Hudson Grahber attends Redondo Union High School and has played the drums for eleven years. He explained how playing music has changed his life, and helped him with his confidence. He expressed how he wanted to share that with other people.
“I wanted to start a band to play cool music with my friends,” said Grahber, “but also to create passionate music and help people connect and relate to the world.”
Sandefur explained how Hiatus was motivated to create music by listening to other bands. It inspired them to make their own music and curate their own specific sound. Hiatus even writes all their own lyrics.
“Personally, I always try to write from my own experiences because it means more to me.” Said Sandefir. “It makes the songwriting process so much easier when you actually relate to what you are writing about.
