This year, Costa has packed the Homecoming Dance and midterms into one shared week. Students have been complaining about the scheduling conflict; however this scheduling is actually very beneficial to students.
Homecoming is supposed to be a carefree experience, but that joy is now being overtaken by the anxiety that results from studying for midterms. This creates a mental strain for students who aretrying to excel both socially and academically within the same week.
These Both activities being the same week could cause a lack of interest for both. Students who prioritize the homecoming dance may receive poorer scores in their midterm exams and students who prioritize academics may not even buy a ticket to the dance. This negatively impacts the school in two ways. For one, it could cause a financial deficit from students not attending the homecoming dance and a lower average in exam scores from student midterms, creating a decline in the school’s academic success.
Although these issues mentioned above propose poor scheduling on the school’s behalf, it was actually a smart decision for the school to schedule the dance the same week as midterms. This is beneficial to students because the homecoming football game and dress-up days take place the week after the actual homecoming dance on the weekend.
The dress-up week and homecoming game requires much more time and preparation than the fun activites that follow. With that in mind, it was smart of the school to schedule the dance the same week as midterms rather than having exams take place the same week as the dress-up days that are meant to be enjoyed.
This scheduling allows students to get a sufficient amount of time to study because midterms are at the end of October so students are still able to enjoy most of the homecoming festivities, stress free.
Even though midterms taking place the same week as the Homecoming Dance seeming seems stressful, students should view it as a gift. If anything, the dance being the same week gives students something to look forward to after a stressful week of exams. In addition, students are then rewarded with a fun week in which they can participate in games, dress-up days, the pep-rally, and the homecoming football game.
