Mira Costa’s Student Government triumphed over La Vista’s staff in the first ever ASB vs. La Vista Winter Games, which were held throughout the week of Jan. 9-13.
The entire competition consisted of a Scholar Quiz match, a game of kickball, a game of capture the flag and three different games of dodgeball.
The games were organized by a collaborative group of students from ASB and La Vista.
“It was really cool to see this small idea turn into such a strong exhibition of school spirit,” La Vista Editor-In-Chief senior Zack Rosenfeld said. “Although La Vista lost, the games were a win for Mira Costa.”
The students played Scholar Quiz for the first event. After a tie at half time, the eight La Vista members were able to pull away in the second half. La Vista won the game, 37-14.
“Though I wasn’t on the Scholar Quiz team, it was fun watching everyone compete,” La Vista staff writer sophomore Ari Gevov said. “ASB was a good competitor, but La Vista was able to pull through.”
ASB went on to dominate the athletic events of the week. On Tuesday, ASB triumphed over La Vista in kickball with a score of 6-0. The following day, ASB continued its success, winning capture the flag, 6-2, on the football field.
“We [ASB] are fortunate to have tons of talent,” auxiliary to public relations Ben Sands said. “You have a freak of nature athlete in Alec Weaver, who can do it all, along with Keith Waddell and many others, but overall it was a team effort in the end.”
For the final event of the competition, La Vista and ASB faced off in three games of dodgeball on the tennis courts. ASB continued its winning streak with victories in the all-girls and co-ed games. The La Vista boys won the all-boys game, which was the last of the three dodgeball games and the final game of the competition.
“We were stoked when we beat ASB [in all-boys dodgeball],” La Vista staff writer sophomore Casey Sublette said. “Hopefully, this rivalry will continue.”
ASB President Travis Taylor acknowledges the existence of past animosity between the two organizations. According to Taylor, the possibility of these games has been discussed for several years with La Vista members with the goal of the games to bring the two groups together through healthy competition.
“Yes, we wanted to beat each other, but in the end it was just a really good way to have fun and raise spirit,” Taylor said. “More than anything, it brought everyone closer together, and I hope that this can remain a tradition.”
ASB will soon receive a plaque for its 2012 victory, which will be passed on to the winner of the competition each year with the intention of making the games an annual event that will involve all Costa student organizations. A “Spring Games” competition is also being discussed.
“Zack Rosenfeld, Kyle Allen and Travis Taylor should be commended for making all these events actually happen,” Claypoole said. “A great time was had by both La Vista and ASB. It really did not matter who won or lost the competition. It was just so much fun.”
