After an absence of roughly three months, Security Resource Officer John Loy returned to Mira Costa on Jan. 16.

Loy had to leave his position as SRO at Costa to work at the Manhattan Beach Police Department due to shortages in the number of personnel from injuries, retirements and maternity leaves.

“It feels great to be back as an officer at Costa,” Loy said. “I missed working with the administration, teachers and students.”

Although Loy is back on campus, there will be occasions where he will be required to go off campus for work at the police station.

“It varies,” Loy said. “Some days I can just be here in my office, relaxing and enjoying the day. Other times I may be called off campus for up to three weeks at a time.”

According to Loy, there is no foreseeable long-term absence in the future. However, his contract as SRO expires soon. Loy will have to decide whether or not to continue working at Costa.

“I would love to do a fourth year,” Loy said. “I’d honestly like to stay as SRO until I retire.”

Administrators believe that having Loy back on Costa’s campus is beneficial.

“It’s great to have him back full time,” Principal Ben Dale said, “His presence and visibility on campus are invaluable. As far as we know, he is back full time.”
