On Friday, March 9, Casino Night was held in the Mira Costa cafeteria from 6-9pm. Principal Ben Dale proposed idea to Student Government about having more student activities on campus. Casino Night was one of his ideas he presented.
“It was at request of Mr. Dale,” Student Activities Director Lisa Claypoole said. “I fully agree with him about having more events on campus. It is great to see everyone come together and have a good time at the events.”
At Casino Night, the students who went learned how to play different games and fake gamble. Prizes were raffled out at the end of the evening. The prizes ranged from a Rockstar Cooler to Los Angeles Kings versus St. Louis Blues.
Those who went to Winter Formal were eligible for a free ticket for Casino Night. Student Governments biggest concern was that everyone who came had a good time. Around 100 people came to the event.
“I had a lot of fun winning money,” Sophomore Ciera Brown said. “I did lose some money but I ended up having a total of $375 by the end of the night. I had such a great time, I hope they have Casino Night next year.”
Casino Night was supposed to be merged with Winter Formal’s “Drop it Like It’s Yacht”, but if both events were combined, the dance would have been $2000 over budget. Due to budget issues, the casino portion was pulled from the dance the day before Winter Formal was held.
“When Winter Formal tickets were not selling very fast, I was very worried we were not going to be able to pay the yacht fee,” Claypoole said. “I feared we would have lost too much money if Casino Night was not pulled. I decided not to take the risk.”
Student Government still wanted to have Casino Night, so they used the profits from the Talent Show to make the event happen. Around $2000 was profited from the Talent Show.
“It was one of the best shows,” Claypoole said. “This Talent Show was one of the biggest I have seen since I have been here, and this was a very big reason why Casino Night worked.”
“Not many people knew what Casino Night was,” Co-Commissioner Mackenzie Becker said. “Also not enough word got out about it, but everyone who went had such nice and positive things to say about it though. Student Government loves putting on events and I hope to be able to do Casino Night again next year.”
