On April 18, the boys and girls track and field squads competed in a home meet against Redondo Union High School. The boys were able to pull of a win against the Seahawks while the girls fell just short.
The boys won the meet with a score of 84-52, with sophomore Niko Pappas breaking the Costa sophomore record in the 800-meter dash after placing third with a time of 1:59.1. Senior Dylan Gates came in second just ahead of Pappas in the 800 with a time of 1:58. Senior Christian Ritchie along with juniors Reed Scale and Sean Griffin swept Redondo and placed first, second and third respectively in the pole vault, all reaching a height of 14-feet and 6-inches. Senior Kyle Hubbard won the 110 and 300-meter hurdles with times of 14.63 and 39.2 seconds respectively. Senior Dan Golubovic placed first in the triple jump with 43-feet and 11-inches and junior R.J. Coleman won the shot put with 42-feet and 2-inches. Senior Zach Adler won the 3200-meter dash with a time of 9:53 while sophomore Carter Anderson placed first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 9:53 and second in the 200 with a time of 22.7 seconds.
The girls lost with a final score of 76-60; several Costa athletes still performed admirably. Senior Acacia Moore won the 110 and 300-meter hurdles with times of 15.54 and 46.8. Sophomore Chealse Tatum placed first in the shot put with 31-feet and 3.5 inches while also placing first in the discus with 92-feet and 1-inch. Senior Ashley Dotson won the 200-meter dash with 24.9 seconds and placed second in the 100 with 12.26 seconds. Senior Kelli Sugimoto broke the five-minute mark in the mile run after placing third with a time of 4:57. Junior Sarah Locke-Henderson won the 3200-meter dash with a time of 11:27.
The Mustangs will compete in the South Bay Invitational at West Torrance and the Mt. Sac Relays at Mount San Antonia College on April 21.
