On April 17, Mira Costa’s Student Government held their annual student mixer, which various Student Governments from South Bay high schools attend.
At the mixer, South Bay Student Governments got together to get to know each other, play games, and have a good time. This year, only Redondo Union High School and El Segundo High School were in attendance.
“Unfortunately we were only able to get Redondo and El Segundo to come because all of the other schools’ invitations arrived while they were on spring break, so they only got notice of the mixer the day before,” sophomore Student Government Commissioner of Special Events Kayla Medrano said. “Last year’s mixer was larger because more schools were in attendance, but this year was fun because it was a little bit more intimate.”
This year’s theme was salad dressings. Students were to dress up as different kinds of salad dressings. Themes from past years have included reality TV, during which Costa dressed up as chefs from Fox’s “Hell’s Kitchen.”
“We try to come up with really original and different themes that are easy and fun to dress up for,” Medrano said. “This theme had been discussed in previous years and we just decided to do it this year.”
Activities Director Lisa Claypoole hopes Student Government members will take part in planning a mixer at least once a year. The schools typically involved include North High School, South High School, Torrance High School, West High School, Palos Verdes High School, Peninsula High School, ESHS, RUHS, and occasionally Culver City High School or Bishop Montgomery.
“We typically in the South Bay contain ourselves and all invite each other,” Claypoole said. “It’s been going on as long as I’ve been the activities director. It’s lots of fun and we usually enjoy it. There are plans for other ones in the future. We’ll host one next year.”
At this year’s mixer, Matt Stern/ DJ Sterntables deejayed. The event was planned by Student Government members Stephanie Palencia and Keith Waddel.
“It was a really well thought-out event and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves,” Stern said. “I had a great time seeing everyone dancing and I hope to deejay for future Student Government events.”
There are plans to hold another mixer at Costa next year, most likely in February or March.
“This year’s went really well,” Medrano said. “Matt played really good music. We played a few games as ice breakers to get to know one another, then dodgeball, and it ended in a fun dance party. I hope more schools come next time, and that the decorations and costumes are a little bit more extravagant.”
