Costa’s dominance did not end when even more track records were broken by Mustangs after Costa placed first overall in the South Bay Championships at West on April 20 and 21.
Sophomore Niko Pappas broke the Costa sophomore record of 4:29 for the 1,600-meter dash with a time of 4:26. Senior Kyle Hubbard was also named Athlete of the Meet after his performances in the hurdles, 4×400 relays and long jump.
“I feel great about winning Athlete of the Meet,” Hubbard said. “The whole team did really well, and it was a good win for us.”
The boys won with a score of 119.50. Hubbard, along with seniors Dylan Gates, Corbin Gates and sophomore Carter Anderson placed first and broke a meet record in the 4×400-meter relays with a time of 3:23.70, the second fastest time in Costa history.
“I had the best day of my season,” Corbin Gates said.
Hubbard placed second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.74 seconds and first in the 300 hurdles at 38.77. He is currently ranked seventh in state in the 300 and 17th in the 100. Hubbard also finished second in the long jump with 21-feet and 2-inches.
“Hubbard’s award demonstrates how great he is,” coach Roberto Calderon said.
In the pole vault, junior Sean Griffin came in first with 13-feet and 6-inches; senior Dan Golubovic came in second place with 13-feet and 6-inches; junior Reed Scale came in third place with 13-feet and six-inches and senior Christian Ritchie followed in fourth with 13-feet.
“It was awesome for us to win the championship and get the team a trophy,” Dylan Gates said.
The girls placed second with 51 points, despite losing distance-runners competing at Mt. SAC.
“The girls did great in spite of not having the distance team,” Calderon said.
Senior Acacia Moore won in the 100 and 300 hurdles with times of 15.5 and 47.73 respectively. Senior Ashlee Dotson won the 200-meter dash with 25.5.
“The results prove that we’re one of the elite teams in the South Bay,” Calderon said.
Costa faced West yesterday, but results were unavailable due to time of publication. The Mustangs will travel to Redondo on May 1 for Bay League Prelims.
“We hope to finish our season strong with league finals,” Hubbard said.
