As a part of the new math and science buildings, Mira Costa biology teacher Danny Sponaugle has discussed implementing a sustainable garden on the roof of the buildings.
A sustainable garden is a garden that uses little to no water, needs little maintenance and can support the ecosystem. Junior Joe Schiff has been asked to design and implement the sustainable garden.
“We feel that this sustainable garden at Mira Costa is accomplishing this goal of teaching and inspiring the community,” Schiff said.
The garden will consist of a variety of plants which are suitable the climate of Manhattan Beach.
“Not only will the garden contain sustainable plants, but it will also contain many sustainable features, including drip irrigation, which recycles water, and a fountain used to naturally attract birds,” Schiff said.
Many teachers at Mira Costa think that the garden will be able to be used for teaching as well as leisure.
“I think this garden will help students better understand many topics, including the concept of photosynthesis,” biology teacher Pamela Manago said. “It will make the students really appreciate learning, through their caring and tending of the garden.”
Many other students are looking forward to the idea of a sustainable garden. Freshman Bella Cuevas believes that this garden will provide a tranquil environment and help the school save a lot of money on water.
“Sustainability is an issue that we need to focus on sooner rather than later,” Cuevas said. “Having a sustainable garden at our school will help begin to restore our ecosystem.”
The sustainable garden is planned to be completed by the year 2013.
“It is our job to create a beautiful landscape that can be sustainable for years to come,” Schiff said.
