The Friendship Circle Club at Mira Costa received an award at the City Council meeting from Mayor Wayne Powell on Tuesday June 5 as well as other individual awards which were presented to club members on May 22.
The Friendship Circle Club received a Certificate of Commendation for their dedication to bettering the community. The club was given this award for their involvement working with special needs students at Mira Costa.
“The Manhattan Beach City Council felt it was very important to recognize the outstanding work the Friendship Circle Club does in improving the quality of life for special needs children,” said Powell.
The students who were picked to receive these awards were chosen for their exceptional dedication to working with and bettering the lives of students with special needs. Each student chosen for the award has spent a great deal of time working with special needs students and has showed loyalty to the club.
“We aim to mix the general education and special education bodies on our campus to create a loving atmosphere, and help kids with special needs find friends and happiness,” said co-president
Taylor Lewis.
“Knowing that our community cares so much about the goals and aims of the club at our school is absolutely incredible.”
The recipients were involved in most of Friendship Circle Club’s events. Most members attended a
Friendship Walk that took place in October. In addition, the Friendship Circle Club took at trip to Disneyland.
The three club presidents, Carley Muller, Nicole Rosen and Taylor Lewis, were given awards. These awards showed their hard work and devotion to Friendship Circle. In addition to the three presidents, Tyler Shalvarjian and Jordyn Irwin were given awards to reward their outstanding work towards the club, who serve on the Friendship Club Board.
“Friendship Circle has changed my life and has taught me compassion and patience,” said co-president Carley Muller. “Receiving this award was an honor. It was surprising and incredible to be recognized.”
Through the years that Friendship Circle Club has been held at Mira Costa it has greatly impacted the city of Manhattan Beach. These students greatly affect special needs students at Mira Costa and in our community.
“Manhattan Beach special needs children and their parents enjoy the friendships and quality time that the Friendship Circle Club members provide,” said Powell. “Moreover, our community is very appreciative that students take time from their academic and athletic activities to give back to those who face challenges.”
