Living in Southern California, many Costa students enjoy surfing, but few reach the level of success sophomore Jordan Wible has achieved.

With the help of big name sponsorships and a near-perfect season under her belt, Wible strives to compete with the best surfers in the nation. Over the course of Costa’s past surf season, Wible claimed 10 out of 13 first-place finishes in long board and was chosen to be on the Surf All-Star Team for long boarding.

“It was an almost-perfect season for me in long board,” Wible said. “Doing well during the season also helped me get sponsors, too.”

In the past year, Spyder, Dizm Eyewear and photographer Dave Gregerson decided to sponsor Wible with merchendise and discounts. In return she wears their apparel when she surfs.

“Companies will only sponsor you if you are good and compete a lot,” Wible said. “They will only sponsor you if it will better their company and improve your skills.”

Wible recently joined the Western Surfing Association, the oldest surfing association in the world. She also sent in her resume to Surfing America, the team that represents the under-18 Youth National Surf Team and is responsible for selecting the official U.S. Surf Team who competes around the world.

“Being in Surfing America means you are one of the best surfers in the nation,” Wible said. “I think my chances of getting in are good.”

Surfing in highly competitive organizations like WSA and the National Scholastic Surfing Association, surfing at the highest level of competitive amateur surfing has helped Wible lead the Costa surf team to qualify for the surfing State Cup, held on September 11 at Hunnington Beach Pier, over rivals Palos Verdes and Redondo Union High School.

“Costa dominated the whole season this year,” Wible said.

If Wible gets accepted into Surfing America she will be able to apply to be a part of the Association of Professional Surfers and compete in the their World Tour.

“She continues to practice and improve,” Wible’s mother Vickie Wible said. “She keeps improving her skills every day.”
