Mira Costa’s 2012 “City of Stars”-themed prom was held for juniors and seniors on June 2 from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. at the California Science Center in downtown Los Angeles.
Seniors Kevin Inlow and Acacia Moore won prom king and queen, and juniors Christian Koppel and Montana Hunter won prom duke and duchess.
“At first it seemed unreal,” Moore said. “I didn’t fully process it at first. It was only after I went home that it really sunk in. It was super exciting, and it is awesome to walk around the campus and hear people saying ‘congrats.’”
“City of Stars” was the first Mira Costa prom to include a prom duke and duchess, who are junior counterparts to the king and queen.
“When I was announced prom duchess, I was extremely surprised,” Hunter said. “I felt honored and happy to be recognized by my peers.”
Students nominate the prom court by giving students’ names to Student Government. Costa students can then vote on nominees during lunch throughout the week leading up to the event.
“I think it’s cool that juniors were able to get something like that,” junior McKenna Howard said. “However, I also think it took away from the glamour of being the king and queen. Prom is supposed to symbolize the last night for the seniors, and the prom king and queen are a huge part of that.”
The only addition to the prom activities that resulted from the new duke and duchess tradition was an announcement of the winners on the dance floor.
Prom featured a series of activities for student entertainment, including a circle-shaped dance floor outside with a DJ, interactive museum exhibits for students to explore and blackjack and poker tables.
“Prom 2012 was an outstanding event in every single way,” Student Activities Director Lisa Claypoole said. “The venue was great, the students were great, and everyone had a marvelous time. I can’t see how it could have gone any better.”
Teachers also attended the prom and helped run the various activities that were offered.
“I thought that there were a lot of activities to choose from at prom,” math teacher Kelly Donovan said. “It was really well organized and very well done compared to proms from other schools.”
Junior class President Rachel Humphrey headed the planning and coordination of prom with Student Government. She too believed prom was as successful as she had hoped it would be.
“All of our work paid off,” Humphrey said. “We could have asked The Event Group to make sure the DJ was more prepared, but everybody seemed to have a really good time. I’m incredibly happy with how the night went.”
