In honor of the 2012 Manhattan Beach Centennial Celebration, a time capsule will be buried on Sept. 2 in front of the Manhattan Beach Historical Society.
The time capsule will contain messages from current residents of Manhattan Beach. These items, notes, and mementos will be gathered during the summer of 2012, with the hope of burying the completed time capsule on Sept. 2, 2012.
“I’m excited to participate in the time capsule,” Manhattan Beach resident Tom Bacon said. “It will be interesting when it’s opened a century from now, because future residents will know what life was like in Manhattan Beach on a personal level.”
The time capsule will be opened 100 years from now in 2112.
“At this point, only a few residents have shown interest in the time capsule,” Manhattan Beach City Council member Nicholas Tell said.
In 1976, to honor the bicentennial of the United States, a time capsule was placed near the Manhattan Beach City Hall. This time capsule included a history of Manhattan Beach and will be opened in 2076.
“I think because of the current time capsule, we hadn’t thought about one for the centennial celebration,” Tell said. “However, there is interest in putting together a time capsule but the specifics are preliminary.”
People who would like to include a personal message to the future may mail or deliver items to the Manhattan Beach Historical Society for consideration. Other items will be considered, and the Historical Society encourages residents’ suggestions.
Mira Costa students are also looking into participating in this memento with interest in providing insight into what life was like as a high school student in Manhattan Beach, both in the classroom and in their daily lives.
“It’s cool because it’s going to preserve a firsthand look at how Manhattan Beach was in 2012,” sophomore Kate Houston said. “I’m looking forward to contributing to the time capsule.”
