Through cycles of change we are reminded of tradition

We’re at that time of year when we start to realize, to our own dismay, how insignificant we really are. We’re in the thick of the transition into our roles as editors-in-chief, but it’s still hard not to feel minute when we look at ourselves in perspective — not just with La Vista, but with everything.

It’s truly incredible to think about how many Mustangs have been in the same shoes of students currently on this campus. How many students have been swept in by Scholar Quiz fever? How many students have clamored to beat the rush to the Hoofprints line (to no avail, might we add)? How many students have stayed awake at night, wondering if a far away school will be a better home for them than the town in which they can name every street from Ardmore to Walnut?

With the acceptance of our lack of uniqueness comes a comfort over the fact that people seriously have been there before. Over the past year, we’ve been at the forefront of the coverage of sex offenders and volleyball champions alike. We’ve gone from a norm of 20 pages each issue to pushing 28 and pull-out sections.

Our paper keeps climbing, even when it seems like there are no more steps up. Kyle and Zack will without question go down with the likes of the best EICs in La Vista history. Still, though, when we think back to them at this time last year, we think about Zack’s attention issues, Kyle’s anger fits, and all the stresses that seemed so monumental in June 2011. And then we remember how it all turned out.

But let us not overlook the meat and potatoes of this newspaper – to our current staff, you are what will keep the wheels running for the next year. There’s no underplaying the impact our former EICs had on us, and hopefully, throughout the next year, we’ll be able to teach the new generation some skills, and help them figure out what type of editors they want (or don’t want) to be in the future.

Even though this is our shortest issue, it’s among the most hectic of the year. But even all of the chaos is just temporary, and the foundations we’re laying here for future staff members trump any craze and confusion this issue throws our way.

So far, La Vista has been continually published for over 60 years, and our paper has been around as long as Mira Costa. Scores of other EICs have come before us and, hopefully, scores more will follow us. Our humble staff and cub issue may seem like the center of focus now, but in the long run they’re transitory. Right now is just another staff turnover in a long history, but that doesn’t mean we can’t embrace and celebrate our new generation.

Even amidst all this change, things really aren’t going to change much. None of us are ever really alone in pushing the ball up the hill, just as we’re not alone in cheering when it starts rolling down.
