Silvera has been playing tackle football for seven years, and two years of flag football. He mainly plays for Costa’s frosh-soph team, but has attended some varsity practices, and suits up for all varsity games.
“It’s really fun to play on the team and I have learned a lot,” Silvera said. “Playing on varsity is amazing. The coaches and players help me a lot.”
Silvera hopes to one day play in college, at his favorite school University of Southern California. Eventually Silvera hopes to make it to the NFL too.
“I like football because it is really fun and it’s great to go out there and have fun,” Silvera said. “Also throwing a touchdown pass is one of the best feelings to me.”
Silvera’s favorite players are Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. Both his dad and his grandfather were both starting varsity quarterbacks in high school, and they have helped him to play at his best today.
“My teammates, friends and family inspire me to play,” Silvera said. “My parents come to my games, my friends play catch and workout with me and my dad coaches and teaches me.”
He has had many offers from various high schools to take his talent and athleticism over to their football teams.
However, coach Morrow is very impressed with Silvera’s skills too. Morrow is impressed with Silvera’s passing skills, understanding of the game, and athletic ability.
“He’s playing Varsity to learn a bit more about our system and to see how varsity athletes conduct themselves,” Morrow said. “He gets to learn some of the varsity plays and his job on the plays themselves.”
Also very impressed with Silvera’s skills are his teammates. Sophomore inside linebacker Dane Largent only had positive feedback. Largent is on the junior varsity and varsity team for Costa and has practiced multiple times with Silvera. He is glad to have a young quarterback with Silvera’s skill on the team.
“Since we have some great receivers and running backs coming up along with Silvera, I think he is going to help strengthen Costa’s passing,” Largent said.
Silvera has a strong future for the Mira Costa varsity football team.
“If he could continue to improve and play like many of us, and he can go on to the next levels of football, then he should really be a factor for Costa football in the years to come,” McClain said.
While Silvera’s parents go to all of his games and support his football career, they make sure he works hard in school and that he keeps his grades up. They say his leadership skills and understanding of the game are already at a varsity level.
“First, CIF championships for Costa, then starting quarterback at USC as a freshman,” Jacob’s dad, Alby Silvera said. “Finally watching him play in the super bowl and holding up the Lombardi trophy is what we can see and hope for Jacob’s future in football.”
