On Tuesday Sept. 25, the Mira Costa boys and girls cross country teams participated in the South Bay Cup Invitational at Columbia Park. The girls varsity team finished in first place, and the boys varsity team did not compete.

Junior Abby Hong led the pack, finishing third overall with a time of 17:11:30. Directly behind Hong, in fourth place, was senior Sarah Locke-Henderson who finished with a time of 17:50:80. Senior Lauren Hagadorn finished 9th (17:29:64), junior Natasha Brunstein finished 10th (17:49:71) and sophomore Emma Lautanen finished 14th (18:04:55).

“I thought we did amazing as a team,” Hong said. “It was a great way to start off the season strong and give us momentum going into our next meet.”

All seven of the girls varsity athletes finished within the top 15 and had a spread of 53 seconds. The second place team, South Torrance High School, finished almost 30 points behind Costa.

“Having such a close spread is really important to us,” Brunstein said. “Knowing that we are capable of such a great score so early in the season is amazing.”

The girls and boys next meet will take place on Saturday 29 in the Stanford Invitational at Stanford University. Only the select varsity and junior varsity teams will be competing.
