On Saturday Sept. 29, the boys and girls Mira Costa Junior Varsity cross country teams competed in the Stanford University Invitational Race. The girls team placed 10th out of 32 teams with a combined time of 105:11. Sophomore Kara Jeong placed 2nd for Mira Costa with a time of 20:05, followed by senior Amanda Zendejas (20:56), junior Janet Warnecke (21:28) and sophomore Bailey Chen (22:37).
“I felt like we did a great job as a team,” Zendejas said. “Even though Peninsula High School beat us, I am still proud of the team.”
During the boys varsity race, senior Dillon Shambaugh helped a fellow runner who had fallen and been injured during the race exit the course safely. However, because he touched another racer, he was disqualified from the race. Therefore the entire boys team was disqualified as they did not have five finishers in the race.
“I’m really disappointed that we got disqualified,” Shambaugh said. “But even if I had to do it over, I would still help that guy off the course.”
The teams will not be competing in a race this weekend as they will be running in the Manhattan Beach 10k.
