The Mira Costa Advanced Women’s Choral, Multicultural Choir, Concert Choir and Vocal Ensemble are continuing to perform at local events throughout the South Bay and are preparing for their upcoming performances, including their December concert at Mira Costa called “This Shining Night.”
Following annual tradition, Vocal Ensemble sang the National Anthem last Saturday at the Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair.
“This was my first time singing for an event outside of school,” junior Avery Jett said. “It was a lot of fun and a great experience. I hope to sing again next year.”
Costa choirs provided over 140 volunteers for the Manhattan Beach 10K. They also provided support at the water stops and at t-shirt distribution.
“We just wanted to have a great time,” choir instructor Michael Hayden said. “We hope that everyone enjoyed the beautifully sung music with us.”
Members of Multicultural Choir are beginning to prepare their repertoire for the winter concert and just finished a performance of the Mira Costa alma mater on Sept. 28 at the Hall of Fame assembly. They are now working on building their skill set on key signatures, flats and sharps.
“I feel that what we are doing is very valuable to our overall choir experience,” freshman Victoria Nwoke said. “Doing these things helps us learn to sing with ease and sing to our full potential.”
Vocal Ensemble is also preparing to sing at California State University Long Beach for the High School Choral Festivals on Oct. 31. The festival is sponsored by The Cole Conservatory of Music of CSULB’s choral department.
“Everyone is working very hard to have their voices on pitch,” Hayden said. “This festival is important because university professors of choral music will give the ensemble members critiques and comments about their performance.”
Members of the Advanced Women’s Choral are preparing for their performance on Nov. 3 with Vox Femina and also for their performance on Nov. 15 at the Redlands Women’s Festival. Nine women’s choirs will come together to perform for each other and will be evaluated by the faculty at the festival.
“I’m excited for the Redlands Women’s Festival because after doing Vox Femina, we are going to be really prepared and we’ll blow everyone’s mind away,” sophomore Phoebe Lyons said. “It’s a real honor and privilege to be chosen for these upcoming choir concerts.”
The members of the Concert Choir are continuing to build their music skills in preparation for their winter concert in December of 2012.
“I really believe that the choir members’ voices are moving just the way I want,” Hayden said. “I’m proud of all their hard work, and we are all looking forward to the December concert to show off what we have practiced.”
