Unlike a typical hip-hop artist who raps about girls, cars, and money, Lupe Fiasco possesses the ability to deliver strong and intellectual messages through his music with a lyrical and poetic style. His songs cover more pressing issues, such as poverty and gender roles, rather than superficial, materialistic topics.
“Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1” consists of passionate and often thoughtful tracks. Lupe Fiasco comes off as a tad bit opinionated, but he presents his ideals convincingly and with musical style.
One of the more powerful singles of the album is “Bitch Bad.” Lupe Fiasco speaks of the media and how it can negatively influence youth. This song makes Lupe’s feelings about the issues in today’s media apparent.
In “Hood Now,” Lupe Fiasco raps about stereotypes that are associated with the “hood.” In one verse he says: “What do you when it’s so unequal?/ Wear Michael Jordan’s with your tuxedos/ It’s hood now.”
Depending on the listener’s interpretation, this song can be either offensive or touching. Though It may seem as if Lupe Fiasco is criticizing his own culture and background, he is, however, acknowledging that the “hood” is also resilient and wholly unique. Either way, Lupe’s poetic style makes the song lyrically beautiful and pleasing.
This album features appearances from Bilal, Guy Sebastian, Casey Benjamin, Poo Bear, Jane, and Jason Evigan, all of whom are not prominent figures in the hip-hop industry.
Compared to his previous album, 2011’s “Lasers,” which strayed from the usual, Lupe has returned to form. “Food & Liquor II” highlights Lupe’s strength. The new release follows suit with previous classics like “Food and Liquor” and “The Cool.”
Lupe Fiasco is an exceptional artist who has proven his excellence once again in “Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album, Pt. 1.” This album is available on iTunes and in most retail stores.
