Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach offer many local, family owned businesses that are open for breakfast. The Kettle, Uncle Bill’s Pancake House, Ocean Diner, and Martha’s 22nd Street Grill are popular amongst students.
According to students, The Kettle is a popular night time and daytime eatery. The Kettle’s menu includes many different breakfast choices. The Kettle offers a wide variety of muffins, pancakes and other foods. The Kettle is also known for their eggs and omelets.
“The Kettle is one of my favorite restaurants to eat at during late starts, and on weekends,” sophomore Dana Sheckter said. “I love their pancakes and their muffins are really good.”
The Kettle has been in business for thirty-nine years. They takes pride in their friendly staff, as well as its roots for being a family run business.
“The Kettle is a great place to work at,” manager Michael McFadden said. “The staff is full of great personalities, and seeing Costa kids come in for breakfast is a great part of my job.”
Another popular breakfast destination that Costa students visit is Uncle Bill’s Pancake House. Uncle Bill’s Pancake House has been a Manhattan Beach institution ever since it was opened in 1947. Uncle Bill’s menu features many seasonal specials as well as regular breakfast dishes.
“Students love coming to Uncle Bill’s because you can see the beach right from your table, plus our meals are inexpensive and high school students love a good value,” owner Matt VanAmburgh said.
Since its opening 1947, the VanAmburgh family has owned Uncle Bill’s. The most popular meals ordered include the Buttermilk Pancakes and waffles.
“My family and I often eat at Uncle Bill’s,” sophomore Trace Demarest said. “I love their pancakes and they also have really good seasonal specials.”
Another trendy breakfast spot for Mira Costa students is the Ocean Diner. Owner of the Ocean Diner, Rick Hankus, loves the 1940’s and the restaurant is decorated with 40’s memorabilia. The restaurant has been opened since the 60’s, and has been a popular place for Costa students ever since.
“My friends and I love to go to the Ocean Diner for breakfast on the weekends,” sophomore Erin Clifford said. “It’s really conveniently located, and the food there is great.”
Most students who eat at the Ocean Diner love the granola, pancakes, muffins, and friendly service. Ocean Diner works hard to create a welcoming and friendly environment for all who chose to eat there.
“I think that the Ocean Diner creates a warm atmosphere for people to eat at,” owner Rick Hankus said. “I think that students like the Ocean Diner because of the affordable prices.”
Martha’s 22nd Street Grill is a well-liked place for Costa students to eat. Martha’s is popular with Mira Costa students for its food and unobstructed ocean view.
“I love Martha’s because the employee’s are nice, the view is really pretty, and the food is amazing comfort food,” junior Makenna McCarroll said.
