The Mira Costa girls volleyball team went up against Peninsula High School for the second time this season on Thursday Oct. 25 on the road. Peninsula came close to forcing a fifth set, but Costa closed them out 3-1 in their seventh league victory.
The first set was extremely close, but the Panthers ultimately won 24-26 after Costa’s faulty start in the beginning of the match. The Mustangs came back in the second game with the help of senior setter Corie Bain, who had thirty-nine assists, five kills and four aces and took the game 25-19.
“Peninsula came out ready to win the match but we couldn’t match their energy level at the beginning,” junior setter Sammy Furlan said. “But we regrouped and took control of the match.”
Again, Costa’s powerful offense took control of the third game 25-19 with senior outside hitter Grayce Campbell, who had fourteen kills and four blocks, and senior outside hitter Lexi Millington close behind with eleven kills and two blocks. The Mustangs won the match in the fourth game 27-25 with the help of senior Gabi Rosenfeld, who had five kills.
“Peninsula came out strong and forced us to push harder for this win,” coach Lisa Arce-Zimmerman said. “It’s going to be a long weekend, but we usually find our spark from wins like these.”
