The American people reelected President Barack Obama as President of the United States on Tuesday, winning 303 electoral votes to Mitt Romney’s 206.
In Mira Costa’s Oct. 29 mock election, Obama won the presidency 64% to Romney’s 28%.
“Costa’s votes were in line with the rest of the United States, validating the process of the mock elections,” Vice Principal Deborah Hofreiter said.
California voters also passed Proposition 30, which increases sales and income taxes by .25% annually to create about $6.8 billion in public education funding over the next seven years.
“I’m thrilled Prop 30 was passed and that the district will uphold the salary negotiations,” history teacher Bill Fauver said.
The passage of Prop 30 allows Manhattan Beach Unified School District teachers’ increase in salary of 3% for the next three years.
“We are very pleased Prop 30 got passed,” MBUSD Superintendent Dr. Michael Matthews said. “It was a great day for the California educational system.”
Though there are mixed reactions concerning Obama’s second term, many students are optimistic about the next four years.
“I’m excited for four more years of Obama’s fight for prosperity and equality,” Young Democrats President senior Adam Gerard said.
